Matala is a small seaside village and a famous beach in southern Crete in the prefecture of Heraklion. It is located on the west coast of the Pyrgiotis province.
Matala Beach has been inhabited since antiquity, but it became famous as a hippie’s residence in the 1960s and 1970s.
Matala used to be a fishing village, but nowadays, inhabitants earn their living from tourism.
