Some of the most famous villages of the prefecture of Rethymnon are Anogeia. Located in a mountainous part of Rethymnon and about 55 km from the center of its capital, it is a wonderful place that has remained unchanged throughout time.
The name of the village comes from the place where it is located; “άνω+γαία” i.e “upper+land”. It is the place to visit if you want to live an authentic Cretan experience.
Respecting tradition and culture, the customs are intact to this day. Anogeia is the birthplace of great Cretan artists, such as Nikos Xylouris, Psarantonis, Vassilis Skoulas, etc., who have had a great impact on the Greek Culture.
